As I expected, this book provides a good overview of some delightful long-distance routes crisscrossing the US. There is way more information available than can be presented in 500+ pages so I don’t fault the author for omitting something I might consider worth highlighting. We will be doing three long trips in the next 18 months (6,000; 5,500; 12,000 miles) and this will be helpful in planning.The shortcomings are few but noteworthy in my opinion. First, I would have gladly paid another $10 for a larger format with a “softer” binding. With this format the text is small and the physical size makes it difficult to keep open and impossible to do so without a holder or a weight. That makes use with a computer for route planning more difficult. Second - more maps please even if you would like to sell me more stuff. Some additional maps would be welcome and easier to do in a larger format. I suppose I’ll invest in a few additional items - it’s not that much more for major trip planning.A lot of effort went into creating this guide and with a few changes (mostly physical in nature) it would go from good/very good to great. Still, worth the purchase price IMHO. Using this for planning a cross country trip. It’s a great starting point for deciding a route. It’s not a road atlas, and it’s not a substitute for doing the legwork of planning. It’s an excellent resource for planning your own adventure, and it’s very useful for deciding where to plan on stopping, spending some time, and there’s a variety of points of interest all along the routes. If you’re looking for someone to tell you how and where to go, this is probably not for you. If you like to choose your own adventure, this book is perfect!
