Ebook About
How and why to live in a car, van or RV, and learn to love it! There are two main reasons you might buy a book on living in a vehicle: 1) You're being forced into it by a bad economy, divorce, or unemployment, or 2) The "American Dream" has become a nightmare for you and you are dropping out of the rat race. Whatever your reason, this book will tell you everything you need to make it the best possible experience it can be. We'll cover details like: which vehicle to live in and how to find it, where to park, staying clean, going to the bathroom, how to cook in a van, get out of debt, survive any bad economy, travel on a budget, how to get your mail, how to stay comfortable in the heat and cold, how to get electrical power, and so much more I can't list it all here. You may be asking yourself, does this guy know what he is talking about or is he just out to make quick buck with another crummy book? That fact that I've been living in a vehicle for over 10 years should ease your mind. But you can find out for yourself by going to my websites to see if I have information you may want: cheaprvliving.com, cheapgreenrvliving.com, cheaprvlivingforum.com and my blog at cheaprvlivingblog.com. I love my Kindle, but I have to admit that I've bought some books that I read in a short afternoon and thought "Where's the beef?" There just wasn't much too them. This isn't one of those books. My concern isn't that I've given you too little information, but too MUCH! I hope I don't overwhelm you with it all. When I typed the book in MS Word, it was 69 pages long and has 37,000 words. I tried to remember back to my first few months living in van, and answer every question you may have. I think I have, but let me assure you that if anything isn't clear I want you to write me through the websites, the forum, and my blog listed above, and I will do everything in my power to make it clear to you.Let me apologize for the inevitable writing and formatting errors in the book. I am not a professional writer, and I know next to nothing about html. What I am is a guy with a huge passion for vandwelling and a strong sense of empathy for anyone trapped in our society who wants to break out. I'm also a guy who, in the last 10 years, has made just about every possible mistake pertaining to living in a vehicle and would like to help you avoid them. By dogged persistence, and lots of study on the Internet, I have learned how to make my life as a vandweller into a wonderful life I want to share that with you.

Book How to Live in a Car, Van or RV--And Get Out of Debt, Travel and Find True Freedom Review :

What I like most was Bob's reminding me of or bringing to light lifestyle choices (those made or yet to be made) which warrant serious consideration or reconsideration. His tips, tricks, product information was pertinent. I hope I never have to eat out of a dumpster. What was missing is how do vandwellers deal with physical or mental illness, or serious health conditions (example cancer)? Do you drive back to your family or to the government and say "here I am take care of me"? Or do you hand your keys & title over to another vandweller and walk off into the wilderness to feed the earth with your remains? What I didn't like (minus 1 star) was his repetition of topics already presented. So much so I was wondering if my Kindle copy had a glitch in it where parts of the book were duplicated in my electronic copy.
By far, the most informative and most concisely written book I've found on van camping of any duration, but much of what he covers would also benefit RV-ers who want to cut costs, or become more cost-efficient.Having read a number of somewhat disappointing books on van camping where fluff and preaching overshadows useful information, this author's writing style is straightforward, yet personalized; and compellingly easy to read, with a lot of really here-and-now valuable content. For instance, how to have 110 power--from just enough for small uses to a lot, and the varying ways to buy (or rig) same is presented understandably, even if you know nothing about it, which I don't. I actually have a basic understanding of choices that would be available to me and what it would cost, both in money and weight/space. He covers everything from showering and personal hygiene alternatives to internet/phone choices. All I can say is my book got heavily highlighted because there was just a ton of stuff I wanted to bookmark. Last but not least, in the few places when a topic's choices are too complex to reasonably include in depth, he lists the actual choices with enough explanation so that you can go straight to one that best fits your needs, and have a good idea what you're looking for, and what to watch for.A really excellent "how to" book. Truly 5-star recommendable!

Book Road Trip USA: Cross-Country Adventures on America's Two-Lane Highways Review :

As I expected, this book provides a good overview of some delightful long-distance routes crisscrossing the US. There is way more information available than can be presented in 500+ pages so I don’t fault the author for omitting something I might consider worth highlighting. We will be doing three long trips in the next 18 months (6,000; 5,500; 12,000 miles) and this will be helpful in planning. The shortcomings are few but noteworthy in my opinion. First, I would have gladly paid another $10 for a larger format with a “softer” binding. With this format the text is small and the physical size makes it difficult to keep open and impossible to do so without a holder or a weight. That makes use with a computer for route planning more difficult. Second - more maps please even if you would like to sell me more stuff. Some additional maps would be welcome and easier to do in a larger format. I suppose I’ll invest in a few additional items - it’s not that much more for major trip planning.A lot of effort went into creating this guide and with a few changes (mostly physical in nature) it would go from good/very good to great. Still, worth the purchase price IMHO.
Using this for planning a cross country trip. It’s a great starting point for deciding a route. It’s not a road atlas, and it’s not a substitute for doing the legwork of planning. It’s an excellent resource for planning your own adventure, and it’s very useful for deciding where to plan on stopping, spending some time, and there’s a variety of points of interest all along the routes. If you’re looking for someone to tell you how and where to go, this is probably not for you. If you like to choose your own adventure, this book is perfect!

Book Our Italian Journey: Living our dream in Italy for one year Review :

I am an American living in Italy so I have a different prospective. We are US citizens without dual Italian citizenship who decided to move permanently to Italy. I feel it would be good to include in this book a notification that not everyone can come to Italy for an extended, year long vacation. if a person wants to follow in the footsteps in this book they will need to be a EU citizen, or obtain a Visa to live in Italy permanently. There is no visa for a one year extended trip such as this.I read this book because I was familiar with the blog from a couple of Facebook groups. I was interested to read their book. For people who want a travelogue of a year-long vacation in Italy, this is a window into a few Italian areas. It reads very much like a diary. Or a compilation of their blog of their one year stay into a “book”. I found the negative comments on the gypsies off putting. Italy has many immigrants and consequently many beggars...ALL of Italy has this. So it is not possible for this couple to settle in a place without these “annoyances”.
I've had the pleasure of following Gary & Ilene's Blog from the beginning, and thought I would know exactly what to expect from their book. I was right, but not to this extent. I've learned so many new & exciting things from the adventures they've experienced, and I cannot wait to return to Italy with this new found love, and hundreds of new ideas of what to do next. My heart was so deeply touched by the emotion I felt while reading. PLEASE, do not pass up the opportunity to read their story, and live vicariously through their words, along this incredible journey.

Ebook About
As thrilling as any novel, as taut and exciting as any adventure story, Peter Hathaway Capstick’s Death in the Long Grass takes us deep into the heart of darkness to view Africa through the eyes of one of the most renowned professional hunters.Few men can say they have known Africa as Capstick has known it—leading safaris through lion country; tracking man-eating leopards along tangled jungle paths; running for cover as fear-maddened elephants stampede in all directions. And of the few who have known this dangerous way of life, fewer still can recount their adventures with the flair of this former professional hunter-turned-writer.Based on Capstick’s own experiences and the personal accounts of his colleagues, Death in the Long Grassportrays the great killers of the African bush—not only the lion, leopard, and elephant, but the primitive rhino and the crocodile waiting for its unsuspecting prey, the titanic hippo and the Cape buffalo charging like an express train out of control. Capstick was a born raconteur whose colorful descriptions and eye for exciting, authentic detail bring us face to face with some of the most ferocious killers in the world—underrated killers like the surprisingly brave and cunning hyena, silent killers such as the lightning-fast black mamba snake, collective killers like the wild dog. Readers can lean back in a chair, sip a tall, iced drink, and revel in the kinds of hunting stories Hemingway and Ruark used to hear in hotel bars from Nairobi to Johannesburg, as veteran hunters would tell of what they heard beyond the campfire and saw through the sights of an express rifle.

Book Death in the Long Grass: A Big Game Hunter's Adventures in the African Bush Review :

I don't really remember when I began being interested in big game hunters and the "big five". But I find Peter Hathaway Capstick fascinating. He comes across as a rather bad boy of the English gentry. His wit, metaphors, descriptions all resonate--British. But he is an American who attended the University of Virginia! He seems to love big, powerful guns/rifles/shotguns, but a close second favorite of his is a round (or three) of "sundowners", hefty glasses of scotch/whiskey/good, really good wine. But he'll settle for a cold beer as long as he has his smokes. I used to watch nature shows and cringe when the lion caught the little antelope. Now I observe predatory animals doing what nature intended for them to do. After all, fried chicken anyone?I have now read all of Capstick's books and enjoyed every one. I particularly respect the way he describes the African people and their different cultures. His trusty gunbearer, Silent, and scout, Invisible, are held in manly affection. Perhaps Capstick's books appeal to me because they represent a type of man and lifestyle which has sustained the human race since the birth of man and seems too often now to becoming men with tidy fingernails, soft hands, and fluorescent tans encased in suits and ties. Well yes, someone has to be a lawyer, but give me the rough-around-the-edges guy any time. Capstick's books allow this armchair traveler to experience the thrill of the safari without the $75,000 fee.
Let me preface my thoughts by saying that I am not a hunter. I have never shot an animal. I have on,t caught 3 fish in my entire life. This book was written in such a way that none of that matters! I really could feel and sense the expeditions as the author masterfully described them. Obviously the lions and elephants are amazing, but the animals that truly captivated me were the leopard and the Cape buffalo. Amazing animals indeed. I remain against the idea of sport hunting, but the author really did reshape my thinking in regards to endangered species. This book was recommended to me by a friend, and I recommend it to you. Enjoy.

Book Frommer's Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks (Complete Guide) Review :

This is the second Frommer's travel guide that I own. They are fantastic guides! They are well organized and can be used for route planning on the go. This one is organized by Yellowstone's areas (usually at road junctions) and provides info about the sites in the area in order, as if you were driving through them. That makes route planning and last-minute decision making a breeze! This guide has mileage between junctions and from the nearest entrance. It also has a small section on things to do outside the park, like in West Yellowstone. A very good guide!
Loved this book, it was so helpful while planning our trip, we had talked about going to this area in years past, but the area was so vast, I would become overwhelmed so we would go somewhere else... but now all our reservations are made, going in August

Ebook About
A hilarious, highly original collection of essays based on the Botswana truism: “only food runs!” With a new introduction and new material from the authorIn the tradition of Bill Bryson, a new writer brings us the lively adventures and biting wit of an African safari guide. Peter Allison gives us the guide’s-eye view of living in the bush, confronting the world’s fiercest terrain of wild animals and, most challenging of all, managing herds of gaping tourists. Passionate for the animals of the Kalahari, Allison works as a top safari guide in the wildlife-rich Okavango Delta. As he serves the whims of his wealthy clients, he often has to stop the impulse to run as far away from them as he can, as these tourists are sometimes more dangerous than a pride of lions. No one could make up these outrageous-but-true tales: the young woman who rejected the recommended safari-friendly khaki to wear a more “fashionable” hot pink ensemble; the lost tourist who happened to be drunk, half-naked, and a member of the British royal family; establishing a real friendship with the continent’s most vicious animal; the Japanese tourist who requested a repeat performance of Allison’s being charged by a lion so he could videotape it; and spending a crazy night in the wild after blowing a tire on a tour bus, revealing that Allison has as much good-natured scorn for himself. The author’s humor is exceeded only by his love and respect for the animals, and his goal is to limit any negative exposure to humans by planning trips that are minimally invasive—unfortunately it doesn’t always work out that way!New story: People often ask safari guides about the experience that frightened them the most. In this story Peter Allison tells of the time he became aware of unseen danger, and knew that somewhere within meters of him was a hunting lioness. Peter Allison is originally from Sydney, Australia. His safaris have been featured in National Geographic, Conde Nast Traveler, and on television programs such as Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures. He travels frequently to speaking appearances, and splits most of his time between Botswana, Sydney, and San Francisco.

Book Whatever You Do, Don't Run: True Tales of a Botswana Safari Guide Review :

I thought this was an excellent book. Well written and filled with entertaining stories. But the thing I loved the most about this book is that it just let me enjoy the author’s adventures with wildlife without getting upset. What I mean by that is, I read A LOT of books about people, nature, and their experience with wildlife. In almost every book, a huge portion of the story goes into staggering levels of habitat decline, the cruelties of poaching, and how no matter what we do from this point on, there’s almost no saving the remaining wildlife left on the planet. Of course I know all this is true. But you know what, I love animals, and some times I just want to read a book that just talks about animals....and not their impending and probable doom. I have almost gotten to the point where I can no longer read any stories to do with animals, as it seems like almost every story is threaded with tragedy throughout. Not this book though. It was just interesting and fun and focused on how lucky the author feels to have spent a portion of his life observing so many of the amazing animals that the African continent has to offer. Bottom line, I wasn’t depressed after reading this book like I am after reading so many other books that center around animals.
Peter's suggestion that guests were the main component of the stories is not entirely accurate. There was not much in the way of embarrassing events by guests. Most of the stories were about his experiences with animals and the descriptive method of his writing made this book easy to read but quite vivid. I have a much better appreciation for the experience i am about to have in Africa. I recommend this book.Oct 2014 updatehaving been to Botswana now i can say this book is even more insightful. the stories are ok but the knowledge of how animals communicate is valuable. it was obvious when the elephants did the low rumble that signaled it was time to move and that identified the matriarch of the group. the alarm calls were easy to spot, tracking was easier. sure we had guides but it was nice to be able to know some of what they were about to say and participate in the conversation and ask good questions. i credit this book with that.also worth noting that prior to our trip when i told my wife of these stops she quickly said i am not going to africa to see birds. i though i was sunk. on the contrary, the wetland experience is fantastic, not dusty (duh) and the birds are not what you might imaging if you are not a birder. they were graceful nd beautiful and spectacular. we n=both loved the birds and we saw plenty of other stuff in Botswana. elephants and hippos were everywhere, you could not escape them and in the delta you ken get right up to them, literally, in boats. Botswana was amazing. the river and the delta. if you go to Botswana do both. there is nothing like it on the savanna or even in the bush. unique.

Ebook About
Now a major motion picture, Kon-Tiki is the record of Thor Heyerdahl’s astonishing three-month voyage across the Pacific.Kon-Tiki is the record of an astonishing adventure -- a journey of 4,300 nautical miles across the Pacific Ocean by raft. Intrigued by Polynesian folklore, biologist Thor Heyerdahl suspected that the South Sea Islands had been settled by an ancient race from thousands of miles to the east, led by a mythical hero, Kon-Tiki. He decided to prove his theory by duplicating the legendary voyage. On April 28, 1947, Heyerdahl and five other adventurers sailed from Peru on a balsa log raft. After three months on the open sea, encountering raging storms, whales, and sharks, they sighted land -- the Polynesian island of Puka Puka.Translated into sixty-five languages, Kon-Tiki is a classic, inspiring tale of daring and courage -- a magnificent saga of men against the sea.Washington Square Press' Enriched Classics present the great works of world literature enhanced for the contemporary reader. This edition of Kon-Tiki has been prepared by an editorial committee headed by Harry Shefter, professor of English at New York University. It includes a foreword by the author, a selection of critical excerpts, notes, an index, and a unique visual essay of the voyage.

Book Kon-Tiki (Enriched Classics) Review :

I first read "Kon-Tiki" when I was a young girl. It has stayed with me my whole life. My long-suffering mother allowed me to paint my room with murals of a huge Kon-Tiki head and imagined Polynesian scenes. Heyerdahl's descriptions of the raft's journey are so vivid, I could recall many of them almost word-for-word.I've long wanted to re-read the book, and gave it to myself as a birthday present. While Heyerdahl's theories of migration are still controversial (though recent DNA evidence may be backing him up more than previously believed), and, very unfortunately, there are undeniably racist elements present in both these theories and his depictions of "brown" people (something I did not realize when young and did not remember), the adventure story still is amazing. I don't at all regret the inspiration it gave and gives to live an adventurous, unafraid life..
I haven't seen the Hollywood movie yet, maybe I will in time but I did watch the original documentary after reading the book and was so glad I waited. It never fails the book is sooooo much better than anything they can put on film, even if it's the actual footage of the event that was written of such as the documentary. For example in the documentary you see them trying to make landfall once across the Pacific and then you see them after they're on land. But in the book? Good gosh I about wet myself turning pages not even wanting to stop long enough to get up and take a leak his account of what they went through is downright riveting. I got this on a whim after hearing Alan Watts refer to it in an old talk and so glad I did. It's a great tale and an easy read, I'm not that fast of a reader and got through it in a few sittings. I highly recommend.

Ebook About
“I love everything about this hilarious book except the font size.” —Jon StewartAlthough his career as a bestselling author and on The Daily Show With Jon Stewart was founded on fake news and invented facts, in 2016 that routine didn’t seem as funny to John Hodgman anymore. Everyone is doing it now.    Disarmed of falsehood, he was left only with the awful truth: John Hodgman is an older white male monster with bad facial hair, wandering like a privileged Sasquatch through three wildernesses: the hills of Western Massachusetts where he spent much of his youth; the painful beaches of Maine that want to kill him (and some day will); and the metaphoric haunted forest of middle age that connects them.   Vacationland collects these real life wanderings, and through them you learn of the horror of freshwater clams, the evolutionary purpose of the mustache, and which animals to keep as pets and which to kill with traps and poison. There is also some advice on how to react when the people of coastal Maine try to sacrifice you to their strange god.   Though wildly, Hodgmaniacally funny as usual, it is also a poignant and sincere account of one human facing his forties, those years when men in particular must stop pretending to be the children of bright potential they were and settle into the failing bodies of the wiser, weird dads that they are.

Book Vacationland: True Stories from Painful Beaches Review :

John Hodgman has written a very personal collection of stories from his life, and deemed them good enough to share with the world via ink appended to substrate. I have never read any of his other works, but I found this book to be very honest in it's personality, comparable to a story being told among friends at a cafe or in a restaurant. It has been my companion on the bus since I first cracked it open, and now that I am nearing the end of the book, I am saddened that this conversation is coming to a close. The bill is paid, and the wait staff is politely ignoring our coffee cups, which have long since emptied. I hope this isn't the last collection of stories that John Hodgman authors.
Hodgman's book is a brilliant writer with a gentle, subversive, and humanistic touch. He's also very funny . The stories in "Vacationland" are strung together nicely, and the emotional terrain navigated nicely -- from the slightly bizarre to the amusingly mundane to the deeply touching. He captures New England dump culture perfectly, Maine's strange blend of cold people and cold water nicely, and his own story's bumps and twists honestly. It's a great book by a satirist and memoirist I will be following from now on as a writer I respect and admire.

Ebook About
The Last Great Mountain tells the story of the first ascent of Kangchenjunga the third highest but reputedly the hardest mountain  in the world. It was an astonishing achievement for a British team led by Everest veteran Charles Evans. Drawing on interviews, diaries and unpublished accounts, Mick Conefrey begins his story in 1905 with the first, disastrous attempt on the mountain by a team led by Aleister Crowley, explores the three dramatic German expeditions of the the late 1920s and brings it all to a climax 50 years later with the first ascent by Joe Brown and George Band. The Last Great Mountain is the final instalment of Mick Conefrey’s acclaimed high altitude trilogy.

Book The Last Great Mountain: The First Ascent of Kangchenjunga Review :

A great historical view of what it took to climb the worlds third tallest mountain. Kangchenjunga has fallen into obscurity but remains a formidable challenge that took much suffering and talent to summit.
This is the third book in Conefrey's Himalayan Trilogy, which begins with Everest 1953 and continues with Ghosts of K2. Each one is first and foremost a terrific read, whether you're a climber or you just like a good adventure story. In fact, that's the key thing about these books: they are written for the general reader, although even specialist readers will be riveted. Each of them--and The Last Great Mountain is no exception--is a real page turner, full of indelible characters and enough drama to keep you up very late at night. Conefrey wears his research lightly and knows how to keep the story moving. It takes nothing away from his achievement to say that keeping these particular stories moving isn't that hard because they are full of built-in drama. But you are warned: if you read one of these, you'll have to buy all three!

Book Lonely Planet Alaska (Travel Guide) Review :

For the most part, this guidebook was helpful, with a couple of notable exceptions. On page 189 there's a sidebar for Hatcher Pass, including this description of the Hatcher Pass Lodge: "If the weather is nice and you have the funds, it's hard to pass up spending the night at Hatcher Pass Lodge...a highly recommended splurge." Really? Imagine our surprise when we checked in at the front desk and found that our cabin (at $145 per night) had no running water and was equipped with a chemical toilet. There was a communal shower available in the main lodge, open from 9 am to 9 pm. We also used this guide for lodging recommendations around Anchorage. There is no mention of several reasonably priced motels on Spenard Rd near the airport.
I have not yet had teh chance to test the information from this guide book on the ground -- will be doing that this summer -- but my initial reaction is that the lack of detail makes me question the reliability of the information.
